Procrastination

Procrastination is the act of unnecessary delaying or postponing works and actions. The word has origin from the Latin procrastinatus, which itself evolved from the prefix pro-, meaning “forward,” and crastinus, meaning “of tomorrow.”

Procrastination is common now. It is said that most of the teenagers don’t like to do their work or school work because of excessive procrastination. Sometimes people gets confused with the term “procrastination” with the “laziness”, but actually laziness means that the quality of being unwilling to work or use energy; idleness. On the other hand procrastination means act of delaying work.

It harms us by delaying to work on our present chores which is ultimately our future goals.

Why we Procrastination?

The reason that now a days students or adults are more inclined to procrastinate. The growing number of internet users are so high that many people waste their time watching series or watching their precious time in social media.

When ever we get a task to complete, we tend to waste our initial time thinking about something else and then after sometime we start to do the work. After doing the work we feel that this work is too difficult to complete it.

The most important reason is that when we work upon something, we tend to to have fear of failing and thus feel anxiety.

When it comes to specific reasons why people procrastinate, in terms of demotivating and hindering factors, the following are among the most common:

  • Abstract goals.
  • Rewards that are far in the future.
  • A disconnect from our future self.
  • Feeling overwhelmed.
  • Anxiety.
  • Task aversion.
  • Perfectionism.
  • Fear of evaluation or negative feedback.
  • Fear of failure.
  • A perceived lack of control.
  • ADHD.
  • Depression.
  • Lack of motivation.
  • Lack of energy.
  • Sensation seeking.

Procrastination and Stress

Now a days we have seen that even kids face stress and have many disorders due to it. Stress is an emotional dis balance of physical tension. It is a reaction to a challenge or demand.

Our young generation spend their blissful time in scrolling down Instagram and YouTube to like photos and video songs because it gives a second of happiness but later gets demotivated by seeing other people’s success of their same age.

When we get started to do our work but later gets demotivated to do it. At some point of time, we get haunted at the back of our mind by the fact that we can not complete the work and thus it takes a several trolls upon upon mindset.

According to researchers if we procrastinate more then it is a high chance of suffering cardiac attack and hypertension.

Procrastination and Shame

Many worst scenario is seen when people procrastinate like we shove a writing project, no matter how important, under a towering pile of meaningless stuff. We write emails, read news or even catch up on Instagram. Somehow these petty things takes upon our priority and thus degrades our creativity and intellectual passion.

When we postpone doing our important stuff, we start to feel guilty because of not able to complete the work and thus fails in it. When we delays doing our work we feel little moments of reliefs are better than hard work.

We blame ourselves because of our laziness, immoral behavior and lack of concentration and hence starts questioning our potential. We can avoid procrastinate by having better time management and organization.

How to get rid?

Delaying works is an active process- you choose to do some other work than your main or urgent work. Laziness is sometimes misunderstand with procrastination, laziness means unwillingness act of not doing the work, whereas procrastination means to delay important work.

Here are the ways of to get rid procrastination-

  • recognize when you procrastinate
  • stuff yourselves with light tasks
  • get rid of the things that would distract you
  • stop taking any help like- working lying from your bed, because you will never complete your work
  • have a cup of coffee
  • start reading emails

Here are some ways how you can simplify your routine:-

  • get organized
  • set simple and achievable goals
  • create a schedule
  • set deadline
  • get rid of distraction
  • time yourself
  • take a break
  • use incentives
  • get the hardest stuff done first
  • tell someone about your goals
